ground level, shall be provided. The outriggers shall be operated
from the operator's compartment and shall not collapse due to loss of
hydraulic pressure in the supply lines. The outriggers floats shall
be attached to the outriggers beams by swivel joints which permit
displacement of the floats by not less than 3 inches between opposite
sides on opposite corners (if applicable) of the floats without
breakage or deformation. An indicator shall be provided for the
operator to determine levelness of the crane during operation of the
outriggers. Means shall be provided to prevent the operator from
accidentally retracting the outriggers. The outrigger floats shall be
sized such that the load bearing surface area per float is not less
than 660 square inches.
3.15 Wheels and tires.
3.15.1 Wheels. The crane shall be mounted on four hubs with four
demountable rim and tire assemblies as recommended by SAE J751. The
wheels shall be fastened to the hubs in accordance with the axle
manufacturer's recommendations for off highway application. Wheel
rims shall be in accordance with the TRA Yearbook.
3.15.2 Tires. All tires shall be new and unused, wide base
off-the-road type, and of identical size and construction. The tir s

shall be pneumatic, low pressure, tubeless, furnished with type E-3
tread. Tires shall have a section width of not less than 29.50 inches
and a ply rating of not less than 26. Tire loadings shall be in
accordance with the TRA Yearbook and the tire manufacturer's
published literature. Valves and caps shall be in accordance with the
TRA Yearbook. Large bore valves shall be furnished. A valve adapter
shall be furnished to reduce the large bore to the standard passenger
vehicle size bore. Valve cape stroll be metal with elastomer inner
seal. Hydroinflated tires are not acceptable.
3.16 Wheel guards. Wheelguards
shall be furnished at all four
wheels to provide protection for
the operator from material being
thrown radially off the rotating
tires. Each fender shall
structurally support a weight of
300 pounds without evidence of
damage.
3.17 Steering and steering control The steering method shall be

the Ackermann type steering and shall provide the operator with a
choice of frontwheel, or a combination of front and rear-wheel
-
steering, including crab steer capabilities. An indicating light
shall be provided on the instrument panel to indicate when the rear
wheels are positioned other than straight ahead. The steering shall
be accomplished by fluid power actuators. The steering system shall
permit control of the crane while traveling at any speed up to the
maximum attainable travel speed (see 3.9.3). The power steering
actuating device shall be located so as to absorb all road shock
without transmitting the shock effect to the steering wheel. The
crane shall operate without loss of operator control when tested as
specified in 4.6.2.11.
3.17.1 Steering control. The front wheel steering system shall be
controlled by a single steering wheel. Rear wheel steering shall be
