4.3 First article preproduction inspection Prior to examination
.
and test of the crane specified in 4.3.1.1 and 4.3.2, the following
shall be performed:
a. Service the crane with oils, greases, and fuel specified herein
and designated for use in the ambient temperatures at which the
teats will be conducted.
b. Conduct the run-in as prescribed (4.6.2.31).
c. Set the hydraulic systems relief pressure as specified by the
contractor and in 3.12 and record. Any change made to this
setting shall constitute failure of all tests.
d. Furnish a schedule of maintenance to be followed during all
testing of the cranes. A list of tools required to perform this
maintenance shall also be provided.
4.3.1 First article (preproduction) examination

4.3.1.1 Pretest examination. Prior to testing, all preproduction
cranes shall be examined for the defects marked "X" in column 1 of
table II (see 4.6.1). Presence of one or more defects shall be cause
for rejection.
4.3.1.2 Post-test disassembly and examination Upon successful
.
completion of all tests specified in 4.3.2, the crane that underwent
road testing (see 4.6.2.29.3) shall be subjected to the tests marked
"X" in column 3 of table III (see 4.6.2). Presence of one or more
defects shall be cause for rejection.
4.3.2 First article preproduction tests Upon successful completion
.
of the examination specified in 4.3.1.1, one first article crane
shall be subjected to the tests marked "X" in column 1 of table III
except for the functional evaluation test, load placement test and
the road test. Two other first article cranes shall be subjected to
the load placement and functional evaluation tests (see 4.6.2.29). A
fourth first article crane shall be subjected to the road and load
placement tests (see 4.6.2.29). Tests may be performed in any order
except the DCA interface test (4.6.2.35.1) shall be conducted as the
first test. Except as otherwise specified herein, test conditions
shall apply throughout testing. Failure of any test except for EMP
testing as specified in 4.6.2.34.1 shall be cause for rejection.
Failure of a first article crane to meet any requirement specified
herein shall be cause for rejection.
4.4 First article (initial production) inspection When specified
.
(see 3.2), four or more initial production cranes will be selected at
random by the Government from the cranes being produced by production
tooling and will be examined for the defects marked "X" in column 2
of table II. The cranes shall be subjected to the tests marked "X" in
column 2 of table III following the same test procedure described in
4.3.2 to determine conformance to the requirements of this
